A Piece of Toledo’s History
We have been perfecting our line of hot dogs, pickles, chili, and other food items since 1932.
Born in 1908 to Hungarian immigrants, Tony Packo was a native of Toledo’s East Side. He learned the restaurant business while working for his older brother, John, who owned the Consaul Tavern located on what is now the Original Tony Packo’s parking lot. In 1932, Tony and his wife, Rose, received a $100 loan to open a sandwich and ice cream shop during the hardest of times in the Great Depression.
Tony created his signature sandwich–the Hungarian Hot Dog–which became an instant hit. Due to the success of their family-owned business, Tony and Rose were able to buy a building of their own. They purchased a wedge-shaped establishment at Front and Consaul Streets, which, over the years grew in size and fame as it became home to what is today’s Original Tony Packo’s Restaurant.

Packo’s Famous Bun Signings
Burt Reynolds may not have realized it at the time, but when he signed a hot dog bun at Tony Packo’s back in 1972, he started a sensation that would live on for generations. Today, the tradition continues with foam replicas of the original buns. Presidents, actors, musicians, and even astronauts have all taken part in this unique custom. Packo restaurants are now celebrated for their Bun Wall of Fame, and the tradition shows no signs of slowing down. Who knows who will be next to leave their mark on this unique piece of Americana?
